LIBERTY ISLAND is a privately owned personal care facility for the mentally ill located in Southwest Houston. These men and women are able to function on their own much of the time; can follow directions and take care of themselves with some supervision.
About half of these individuals have no family who are able and/or willing to provide attention in the form of visitation and gifts. Ministering to the residents of Liberty Island has become a tradition at Alief. Several visits are made throughout the year to visit, serve meals, entertain, and give cards and gifts.
Each Christmas we visit Liberty Island to enjoy an afternoon of Christmas caroles and gift-giving. Gift bags are given to all 160 residents. Valentine's Day provides another ministry opportunity, particularly our youngsters. This is when our Caravan children take a field trip to Liberty Island and perform skits and demonstrations for them, and have the enjoyable task of passing out cupcakes, valentines and candy to the residents. These have consistently proven to be fun and meaningful visits for both the children and adults of Alief.
No matter what time of year we visit Liberty Island, we enjoy interacting with the residents. They are as much blessing to us as we are to them!
